A platform for community innovators to pitch social-impact ideas, receive feedback, and access support to scale their initiatives.

First hosted on June 16, 2025, the Be A Nelson Pitch Competition provides a stage for "Nelsons" and community innovators to present their practical social-impact ideas.

The event was a remarkable display of creativity, passion, and dedication from participants, affectionately known as "Nelsons," showcasing ideas that resonated deeply with judges and attendees alike.

Distinguished Panel of Judges

The competition was graced by a panel of experts who provided valuable insights and constructive feedback:

  • Gerdien Stam Project Manager at a leading multinational corporation, expert in bridging technology with real-world commercial applications.
  • Mark Stienen Seasoned leadership coach and facilitator, with a career spanning law and human resources.
  • Jochem Wieringa Entrepreneur and investor committed to supporting startups addressing global issues like poverty and healthcare.

Tanya Mupfure expertly steered the event as the Master of Ceremonies, ensuring smooth transitions and lively engagement throughout.

Gontse Molope – Nou So Deliveries

A WhatsApp-based delivery system enhancing accessibility and creating local job opportunities in townships.

Tiisetso Seoe – Mathari Theatre Production

Leveraging theatre as an educational tool to empower young people and address social issues.

Competition Results

After careful assessment based on relevance, creativity, potential impact, and feasibility, the judges selected the top three projects. The winners were awarded a cash prize totalling **R10,000.00**, generously sponsored by Jochem Wieringa, to help scale their growth and community reach.
